Walking tour to the ruins of a medieval castle

For those who love to lovers forest walks, we offer dozens of walking routes to the ruins of medieval castles. In Alsace there are more of them than anywhere else in France: More than eighty fortresses built in the X-XIII centuries, partially destroyed, but retaining their original. These powerful structures are usually located on the hills in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, facing the Rhine. Almost all castles are accessible only on foot.

Hiking trails are laid along the wooded hillsides and have varying difficulty levels. Depending on the difficulty level and on the height at which the castle is located, you can spend from 20 minutes to an hour and a half to reach the castle. Simple routes do not imply climbing, but just a pleasant forest walk.

You will certainly need comfortable hiking shoes to walk on rocky paths, in the forest and, in some places, even along the rocks.

Having reached the castle, like a medieval traveler, you will not only feel like a conqueror of the peaks, but also get the opportunity to admire the breathtaking panorama of the Rhine valley.

Bebenhausen

Almost a thousand-year history imprinted in stone: A monastery and a castle

The miraculously preserved monastery, founded in the XII century 4 kilometers from the northern border of Tübingen, is still surrounded by a dense forest. Here the visitor is embraced by the special atmosphere of the stopped time. You will see the Romanesque architectural style, its transition to the Gothic style, the heyday of Gothic, as well as historicism - neo-Gothic.

Catholic monks, who prayed for 350 years for the health and repose of the souls of the rulers, after the reformation in the 16th century were expelled from here. Instead, the schoolchildren were settled in these walls, who at the expense of the Württemberg dukes were prepared for admission to the University of Tübingen. So that they would become Protestant pastors and in their sermons in front of the large flock to strengthen the influence of those in power.

The dukes did not forget the wonderful local hunting grounds. And in 1806, when the Duke Frederick (the brother of the Russian tsarina Maria Fedorovna, daughter-in-law of Catherine the Great) became the mercy of Napoleon the first King of Württemberg. Then a complete secularization was carried out. The school was transferred to another place, and here the sound of hunting horns and shots was heard. This was not only entertainment, but also an occasion to get together and chat with representatives of the higher nobility. Of course, it was necessary to fit out an accommodation for the king and his guests.

Grandson of Frederick I, King Karl, who was keen on history, undertook the necessary work to strengthen the buildings of the ancient monastery and decorate the interiors of the castle in the Neo-Gothic style. Officially, he was preparing a gift for his wife, the royal daughter Olga Nikolaevna. However, the money for this, as well as for much more, Karl took from her dowry. Here he had a rest in his male company.

The last king of Württemberg - William II - was an avid hunter. When the emperor of Germany came from Berlin to his Hohenzollern fortress (which is only 30 kilometers from Bebenhausen), he was invited here to hunt. And after the forced abdication in 1918 and until his death, the former king of Württemberg with his wife lived here almost without a break. Both the beautiful interiors and the necessary utility rooms of the time (kitchen, bath) have been well preserved.

Apparently, the common roots of the Württemberg and Hohenzollern (Burg Hohenzollern) showed themselves in the 20th century . The state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern existed from 1945 to 1952, and the members of the Landtag (government) held their multi-day meetings here in Bebenhausen. In 1952, the state of Baden-Württemberg was created. Alexandra (A. Zenger)

Booking

Hohenzollern Castle

Those who know the name Hohenzollern will immediately remember about Berlin, Potsdam: about Prussia, located on the Baltic Sea, and will be absolutely right. But it turns out, not really. The famous dynasty, whose representatives in the 19th and 20th centuries even became Kaisers of the united by them from many kingdoms and duchies German Empire, comes from here, from Schwabenland!

Founded in the 11th century, at that time still common with the Württemberg family seat, was twice destroyed and for the third time in the 19th century restored in the Neo-Gothic style. Now the castle is living a new life.

Now the owner of the castle is the young Prussian Prince Georg Friedrich von Hohenzollern. As the head of the Hohenzollern House, he officially bears the title of "His Imperial and Royal Highness." His family already has four children, i.e. the dynasty has a future.

The breathtaking, almost thousand-year history of the dynasty is reflected in its motto: “From the cliff to the sea!”, which we read at the gates of the fortress. This motto, which appeared already in the 19th century, states the fact: Yes, from here, in various , such as by getting married, by war, or, as during the reformation, by changing a religious denomination, the Hohenzollern increased their holdings from one generation to another generation. Martin Luther, who was an opponent of Catholicism, gained such popularity among the highest nobility because he called for the "privatization" of church property. Then, 500 years ago, one of the Hohenzollerns was the head of the Catholic German Teutonic Order (Deutsche Orden). The Grand Master of the Teutonic Order was not at a loss and "privatized" with the right to inherit an entire state: Prussia, conquered by the Order and belonging to him. But there is a Catholic, Protestant, and even an Orthodox chapel in the fortress!

The wife of the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, whom Pushkin called the "White Rose", was a nee Prussian princess; her sibling restored this fortress, and her portrait can be seen here. You will first admire from below the beautiful silhouette of the fortress against the backdrop of clouds. Then, you will enjoy the amazing views from a 900-meter high hill and magnificent neo-Gothic interiors of the castle. You can relax and have a meal here in the castle restaurant, or have a snack in the fresh air. It is very interesting place for both children and adults. It is not surprising that the fortress is crowded by tourists at any time of the year. Alexandra Zvyagolskaya

Mont Sainte-Odile: Celtic magic and Merovingian tombs

Monastery of Saint Odile on Mount Odilenberg (Altona) of the 9th century - - an oasis of mystical and sacred ecstasy of the ancient Celts and ritual places of sacrifice by the Druids. The third most important religious place in France, the sarcophagus with the relics of St. Odile. A magnificent panorama of Alsace from a height of more than 700 meters. The former castle of the Merovingian nobility of 8-10 centuries.

The famous Alsace Wine Route begins with a picturesque medieval village founded at the beginning of the XII century, and is the domain of the German imperial dynasty of Hohenstaufen. The Romanesque church of Saints Peter and Paul from rare yellow sandstone was erected by medieval architects during the time of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and is still a unique monument of Romanesque architecture.

The central street of the ancient village has been part of the trade route since Roman times and a segment of the road of medieval pilgrims who held their way to Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Jerusalem. It immediately opens an impressive view of the mountain range, drowning in the bluish haze of the majestic Vosges Mountains. If you look closely at the contours of the mountains, then on one of the flat peaks you can clearly see solid monumental monastery buildings: This is the ancient abbey of St. Odile of Alsace, one of the main cult centers of the entire Christian world, existing from the beginning of IX centuries on top of the ancient Celtic mountain Allitona.

The stones on the top of the mountain still remember the days when the ancient Celts owned these vast territories and their magical priests-druids at the time of the full moon gathered the shoots of the holy mistletoe with the help of golden sickles to prepare a ritual drink for sacred mysteries, accompanied by human sacrifices. According to legend, the monumental fragments of the "pagan wall" -Mur paien, consisting of huge boulders overgrown with hundred-year-old moss, were created by the Celts to protect their territories from Roman legions and raids of other warlike peoples.

Saint Odile is today the spiritual patroness and heavenly protector of Alsace. The monastery, located on the ancient Celtic mountain of Allitona, is currently the third most important religious center in France, after the Sanctuary in Lourdes and the monastery-island of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy. An interesting fact: In the 9th century, Emperor Charles the Great specially opened the sarcophagus of St. Odile in the Hohenburg Abbey in order to take a particle of her hand as a relic.

The atmosphere of this place is really unusual and mystical. Every year more than two million people visit this place of worship. Everyone is looking for and, apparently, finds something here.

You feel incredible every time you go up to a height of almost eight hundred meters and see the thousand-year-old boulders, still remembering the sacred rituals of the Celts and the tread of the Roman legions, huge oaks and pines in the ancient forest, and an incomparable view of the picturesque landscape of the vast vineyards of Alsace near the foot of the mountains.

Traditional University Town Tübingen

Among the thousand-year-old walls of Tübingen, for more than five hundred years (since 1477), young voices of many generations of students have been heard. The names of the graduates of the University: philosopher Hegel, astronomer Kepler, neurologist Alzheimer ... And now most of the people you meet on the old streets are youth. Indeed, every third of 90 thousand residents of Tübingen is a student . And, of course, there are many tourists here admiring the medieval architecture and museums of the town.

The architectural dominant of Tübingen is the main church of the city (Stiftskirche). Under the Catholics, before the introduction of the Reformation in 1534, the most important events of university life took place in the altar part (choir) of this church: not only disputes and defense of dissertations, graduation, but also celebrations. The Württemberg dukes, who became Protestants because it helped them to regain power, previously lost by Duke Ulrich (1487- 1550), set up a tomb of the ducal family here. Magnificent tombstones, witnesses of long-standing events, are available for viewing.

After his return, the Duke Ulrich ordered to damage the church in the ancient abbey of Bebenhausen on the outskirts of Tübingen, to use stone blocks as building material to expand and strengthen his Hohentübingen castle. Can a believer to act like this? “Hope in God, but don’t be fooled ...” This saying could be the duke's motto. On the relief of the gates of the fortress you will see how the famous Order of the Garter looked. Friedrich I of Württemberg (1557-1608), the grandson of Ulrich, I had long sought for the honor to get that Order from the Queen of England. It is believed that Shakespeare mentioned him in the comedy “The Windsor Mockers” writing about the visit of a German Duke to Windsor, although he was not invited at all.

Hohentübingen Castle in the 19th century was completely let by the William I of Württemberg to the University; perhaps because his son Karl, heir to the Württemberg throne, studied here, though only one semester,. The University Museum "Ancient Cultures" presents figures carved from the mammoth bone 40 thousand years ago and found nearby, in one of the caves of the Swabian Alb Plateau. These are the oldest known works of art in the world.

The university cedes part of the castle to bat colonies, which, since olden times, fly to the castle cellar every spring and breed here their offspring. It is strictly prohibited to enter the castle cellar. In order not to disturb the bats, even theatrical performances in the castle courtyard were stopped.

During the industrialization of the 19th century, university professors, mainly humanities, opposed the creation of an industrial zone. Apparently, it was the reason why Tübingen did not suffer from military destruction. In addition, they say that at the helm of a bomber aimed at bombing Tübingen, there was a Frenchman, a former Tübingen student; he spared his Alma Mater and dropped bombs on a nearby town.

Similar to the Venetian gondolas, in Tübingen, tourists can explore the city from the water of Neckar river boating in Stocherkähne - the large punts that can accommodate up to 20 passengers and are cleverly controlled with the help of a long pole by just one "captain". You can try true Swabian dishes in small local restaurants.

It is very convenient to combine on one tourist "working" day the visits the ancient Bebenhausen monastery on the outskirts of Tübingen, to Tübingen itself and to the Hohenzollern Castle, 30 kilometers from here. Alexandra (A. Zenger)
