Almost a thousand-year history imprinted in stone: A monastery and a castle
The miraculously preserved monastery, founded in the XII century 4 kilometers from the northern border of Tübingen, is still surrounded by a dense forest. Here the visitor is embraced by the special atmosphere of the stopped time. You will see the Romanesque architectural style, its transition to the Gothic style, the heyday of Gothic, as well as historicism - neo-Gothic.
Catholic monks, who prayed for 350 years for the health and repose of the souls of the rulers, after the reformation in the 16th century were expelled from here. Instead, the schoolchildren were settled in these walls, who at the expense of the Württemberg dukes were prepared for admission to the University of Tübingen. So that they would become Protestant pastors and in their sermons in front of the large flock to strengthen the influence of those in power.
The dukes did not forget the wonderful local hunting grounds. And in 1806, when the Duke Frederick (the brother of the Russian tsarina Maria Fedorovna, daughter-in-law of Catherine the Great) became the mercy of Napoleon the first King of Württemberg. Then a complete secularization was carried out. The school was transferred to another place, and here the sound of hunting horns and shots was heard. This was not only entertainment, but also an occasion to get together and chat with representatives of the higher nobility. Of course, it was necessary to fit out an accommodation for the king and his guests.
Grandson of Frederick I, King Karl, who was keen on history, undertook the necessary work to strengthen the buildings of the ancient monastery and decorate the interiors of the castle in the Neo-Gothic style. Officially, he was preparing a gift for his wife, the royal daughter Olga Nikolaevna. However, the money for this, as well as for much more, Karl took from her dowry. Here he had a rest in his male company.
The last king of Württemberg - William II - was an avid hunter. When the emperor of Germany came from Berlin to his Hohenzollern fortress (which is only 30 kilometers from Bebenhausen), he was invited here to hunt. And after the forced abdication in 1918 and until his death, the former king of Württemberg with his wife lived here almost without a break. Both the beautiful interiors and the necessary utility rooms of the time (kitchen, bath) have been well preserved.
Apparently, the common roots of the Württemberg and Hohenzollern (Burg Hohenzollern) showed themselves in the 20th century . The state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern existed from 1945 to 1952, and the members of the Landtag (government) held their multi-day meetings here in Bebenhausen. In 1952, the state of Baden-Württemberg was created. Alexandra (A. Zenger)
